Lily Matini

Swing dancing since: 1999

Lily started swing dancing in 1999, when she co-founded the Oberlin (College) Swing Society (OSS) which she ran as Co-President. OSS is still run by students today, planning workshop and dance events with live music for college students and their guests. Since then she has mastered her favorite swing dances: Lindy Hop, Balboa and Collegiate Shag. A nationally-ranked competitor since 2003, Lily has won titles at such contests as the National Jitterbug Championship, American Lindy Hop Championship, Balboa Rendezvous, Swing Fling, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, Rhythmic Arts Championships, and the Virginia State Open. Lily has also peer-judged at the Eastern Balboa Championships, All Balboa Camp Detroit, Paris Balboa Shag Festival, and the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown. She has appeared in numerous films, TV programs, news specials, and tributes, most notably performing for an audience of over 140,000 WWII veterans, as well as President Bush and Tom Hanks, at the WWII Memorial Dedication in Washington D.C in 2004. Lily taught beginner and intermediate swing dance class with fellow teammate Kevin Crandell for Gottaswing LLC in Capitol Hill, Washington DC SE for about five years, and at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in NW DC.
